Round Recap – Week 27

RoundRecapWell, it took until the final weekend of the season, but we finally have a Premier. Congratulations to Adelaide United who, after a 2-0 win away at Melbourne City on Friday, had results go their way throughout the weekend, allowing them to claim their second A-League Premier’s Plate.

On Saturday, the inconsequential game of the week saw the Jets defeat the Mariners 4-2 at Central Coast Stadium, before Melbourne Victory held out Brisbane Roar later that night to ensure Adelaide’s triumph.

Then, on Sunday, the Wanderers leap-frogged the Roar to claim second place (and …

Round Recap – Week 26

RoundRecapTop spot in the A-League changed hands three times in round 26, as each of the top four teams fought for superiority.

Ultimately, the fate of the Premier’s Plate will come down to the last 5 games of the season, setting up a spectacular round 27 next weekend.

The action began on Friday when the Wanderers saw off the Mariners 4-1, allowing them to take top spot back.

Then, on Saturday, the Victory ended Sydney FC’s season as they downed the Phoenix 4-1 on the road. Later that night, Adelaide United got past Sydney FC …

Adelaide United followed suit on Sunday, defeating the lowly Mariners 4-2 at home, whilst Perth kept pace with an important 2-1 away win over Newcastle.

On Saturday afternoon, the Mariners left it late to recover from 2-0 down to rescue a point against Sydney FC. Then, on Sunday, Perth downed the …

Round Recap – Week 23

RoundRecapIt had to happen eventually, but Adelaide United’s 14 game winning streak finally came to an end in round 23 at the hands of Melbourne City.

That allowed City to pull within a point of the Reds on the A-League ladder, whilst Brisbane jumped up into first thanks to a 5-0 thumping of the Victory.

Perth Glory continued their march up the table with a 4-0 demolition of the Mariners and, after Sydney went down to the Phoenix 3-1 earlier that day, the Glory now sit 4 points (plus goal difference) inside the top …

Round Recap – Week 22

RoundRecapWell, we have a new leader in the A-League after round 22, with Adelaide extending their unbeaten streak to 14 games and taking first place on the table from Western Sydney Wanderers, who went down 3-2 in a classic match on Friday night.

Adelaide’s 4-0 win over Wellington on Saturday launched them into first, before Melbourne City kept pace with the top three later that night with a 3-0 win over Sydney FC.

Round Recap – Week 21

RoundRecapA win to Western Sydney and a loss to Brisbane Roar sees the Wanderers establish a crucial two point advantage on the A-League ladder after round 21. Western Sydney saw off Perth Glory 2-1 on Friday night, before Brisbane Roar suffered another substantial loss as they went down 3-0 to the in-form Adelaide United.

In the first game of the week, Wellington shocked Melbourne City 2-1 in windy conditions in the New Zealand capital on Friday night, and on Saturday night, Melbourne Victory could only manage a 1-1 draw with ten-man Sydney FC …

Round Recap – Week 20

RoundRecapThere’s hardly a need for scrapping the offside rule and making the goals bigger in the A-League, after another 22 goals were banged in a crazy, yet entertaining, round 20.

Adelaide started the week off with a last-gasp win over Melbourne Victory on the road, before Newcastle overcame a spirited Wellington Phoenix on Saturday afternoon.

In the Sydney derby, a first-half goal each way ensured a 1-1 draw, before Perth Glory smashed six past the Roar in a ridiculous 6-3 result late on Saturday.

Then, on Sunday, Melbourne City edged closer to ensuring a finals …

Round Recap – Week 19

RoundRecapThere was plenty to talk about after a pulsating round 19 of the A-League, and not just off the field. Yes, despite all the anti-flare talk and rhetoric during the week, we still had flares at the Melbourne Derby.

But, conversely, we had some cracking matches to enjoy. Brisbane and Newcastle played out a to-and-fro 2-2 draw on Friday, before Perth shocked Sydney FC 2-1 on Saturday afternoon.

Then, in the Derby, City and Victory drew in controversial circumstances, before Wellington (and Blake Powell) destroyed the Wanderers 5-2 on Sunday. Finally, Adelaide edged out …

Round Recap – Week 18

RoundRecapRound 18 provided plenty of highlights, a few (off-field) lowlights, and ensured that we’re still no closer to knowing the makeup of the top 6 in the A-League this season.

On Friday, Adelaide’s winning run was halted by Sydney FC in an entertaining 2-2 draw. Then, on Saturday, Brisbane smashed the Mariners 4-0 at home to continue their resurgence of the past few weeks.

Elsewhere, the Jets downed City 2-1 and the Glory edged past the Phoenix 1-0 on Sunday, whilst in the Game of the Round, Melbourne Victory held on for dear life …
