Roar scrape by ten-man Newcastle

Brisbane Roar have defeated Newcastle Jets 2-1 on Sunday afternoon at Suncorp Stadium.

Henrique and Thomas Broich scored for Brisbane, while Leonardo scored the sole goal for Newcastle.

Jack Hingert and Matt McKay returned for the hosts, while Daniel Mullen and Enver Alivodic returned for the visitors.

Brisbane had the first major chance in the 5th minute after striker Jamie Maclaren found himself one on one with Newcastle goalkeeper Mark Birighitti, however Birighitti did well to block the chance.

Dimitri Petratos had a big chance for Brisbane in the 11th minute, however Birighitti saved the shot.

In the 23rd minute, Enver Alivodic nearly scored for the away side, however he missed just to the right of the post.

Mark Birighitti again blocked a Brisbane chance in the 32nd minute, with Jamie Maclaren being unable to beat the Newcastle goalkeeper.

Newcastle were awarded a penalty in the 48th minute, after the ball struck Jade North’s arm. Leonardo successfully converted the penalty and put the visitors up.

Dimitri Petratos had a powerful shot in the 55th minute, however Birighitti made an acrobatic save to deny the chance.

Newcastle almost doubled their lead in the 58th minute, after Ryan Kitto headed from close range, only for Jamie Young to save.

Jamie Young was called into action again in the 63rd minute, after he saved Steven Ugarkovic’s shot.

Brisbane were awarded a penalty a minute later when Nigel Boogaard brought down Henrique in the box. Boogaard received a red card, his fourth of the season and second in two games. Henrique converted the penalty and levelled the scores.

Thomas Broich gave Brisbane the lead in the 73rd minute, after he finished from a Corey Brown cross. The goal sent Brisbane to the top of the table and aided the Roar in their quest for the Premiers Plate.

Brisbane held on and secured a vital victory with one round remaining.

They find themselves on top of the table and travel to Melbourne for their important clash against Melbourne Victory next Saturday night at AAMI Park. Newcastle remain in 8th position and face their rivals Central Coast Mariners in Gosford next Saturday afternoon.
