Four goal win pushes Reds into first

Adelaide United have slotted into top place on the ladder following a comprehensive 4-0 victory over the Wellington Phoenix at Westpac Stadium.

Two goals in each half saw the Reds claim the win in an impressive performance with Dylan McGowan, Stefan Mauk, Bruce Djite and Pablo Sanchez all getting themselves on the scoresheet.

In squad news, Wellington’s Hamish Watson returned to the starting eleven after missing out last week due to suspension, with Louis Fenton dropping to the bench.

Adelaide welcomed back Craig Goodwin to the side with the winger recovering from a concussion to replace Bruce Kamau, while Iacopo La Rocca earned a spot on the bench after recovering from injury.

The opening stages of the match lacked any major goal scoring opportunities, with the Reds left in some concern after Tarek Elrich was substituted in the 17th minute with a groin injury.

The visitors scored the game’s first goal in the 31st minute through central defender Dylan McGowan. Jordan Elsey headed the ball across the face of goal following a corner with McGowan sitting unmarked at the far post to place the ball into the back of the net for Reds to lead 1-0.

The Phoenix looked to hit back instantly with Roly Bonevacia receiving the ball inside the goal box following a throw in, but the midfielder’s volley flew straight into the arms of Eugene Galekovic.

Adelaide doubled their lead in the 41st minute after Marcelo Carrusca’s delightful through ball set up Stefan Mauk who calmly slotted the ball past Glen Moss for his second goal in a Reds shirt.

Returning to the second half, the Reds seemingly put the game to bed after Bruce Djite found a third goal in the 49th minute. Marcelo Carrusca again involved delivered a superb long pass for Craig Goodwin who squared the ball for Djite to score from right in front of goal for his fifth strike of the season.

Wellington created a great chance in the 56th minute as Hamish Watson collected a misplaced back pass from Sergio Cirio and fired a shot on goal, but Galekovic showed excellent reflexes to parry the ball clear.

The Phoenix came close to a goal again in the 71st minute in spectacular fashion as Roly Bonevacia’s long-range free kick from the wing sailed high towards goal, but collided with the goal post.

Michael McGlinchey looked to salvage a goal for the Phoenix in the 87th minute via a free kick, but Galekovic saved his effort easily.

Substitute Pablo Sanchez capped off a remarkable performance from the Reds with a well-taken goal in second half stoppage time, sealing the win for his side.

Round 23 sees Wellington Phoenix travel to Sydney to face the Sky Blues, whilst Adelaide will hope to continue their superb form as they host Melbourne City.
