Clinical Brisbane jump into top spot

Melbourne Victory has been resigned to its equal biggest loss after being demolished 5-0 by Brisbane Roar.

Jamie Maclaren scored a hat-trick while goals from Corey Brown and Corona made for an emphatic scoreline as Brisbane jumped to the top of the table following Adelaide United’s loss last night.

Not content with Brisbane’s poor defensive record of late, John Aloisi made two changes, dropping Michael Theo and Shane Stefanutto. Jamie Young and Corey Brown were promoted to the starting line-up.

Meanwhile for Melbourne Victory Ollie Bozanic returned in midfield, replacing Leigh Broxham.

It was a night of milestone’s for both sides. Besart Berisha started in his 50th game for Melbourne Victory against his old side while Thomas Broich played his 150th game for Brisbane Roar. The biggest milestone of the night was Danny Vukovic, who became the first player to reach 250 games in the A-League.

Despite the visitors having the bulk of play in the early stages, Roar took the lead just before the 20 minute mark as Brandon Borrello picked out Jamie Maclaren free across the box. The striker may have had a point to prove after missing out on Socceroos selection earlier this week and made the most of this chance.

Maclaren doubled his money four minutes later after he was released by an incisive long ball from Dimitri Petratos. Vukovic was caught in two minds as he looked to claim the ball at the top of the box but Maclaren reached it first and lobbed it into the empty net.

Corey Brown sealed the result early in the second half as a fortuitous deflection helped him claim his first A-League goal. His shot from outside the box would most likely have been saved by Vukovic but for a deflection off Berisha’s knee. The defender was still happy to celebrate the resulting goal.

Corona put the cherry on top with 15 minutes remaining as Petratos broke down the right flank on the counter attack. The winger had picked out Maclaren to finish his hat-trick but the shot was saved by Vukovic. The Spanish midfielder was alive to the rebound however and coolly dinked the ball over the goalkeeper.

Maclaren was able to claim his hat-trick 10 minutes later, punishing Victory after dire defending from the corner. The ball had dropped to Matthieu Delpierre but the Frenchman was unable to control the ball which Maclaren willingly pounced on to turn and blast the ball past Vukovic who was livid at his defenders.

Brisbane travel to Melbourne next week to take on Melbourne City while Victory will be looking to bounce back against Suwon Bluewings on Tuesday night in the Asian Champions League before hosting Newcastle Jets next Sunday.
