Nordstrand brace edges Jets past ten-man Phoenix

Newcastle Jets defeated Wellington Phoenix 3-2 on Saturday afternoon at Hunter Stadium.

Morten Nordstrand started for the home side, while the Phoenix, who celebrated the news of their license renewal for ten years midweek, welcomed back Ben Sigmund, who made the bench after a long absence.

Blake Powell nearly opened the scoring in the 21st minute, however the Jets defence prevented the chance.

From the resulting corner, the Phoenix scored through Hamish Watson, who found himself open at the back post and shot past Newcastle goalkeeper Mark Birighitti. Despite the sluggish start to the match, the Phoenix finally gave the match a goal.

The Jets equalised in the 26th minute with an own goal to Phoenix skipper Andrew Durante. The goal was set up with a decent cross by Jets player Leonardo.

Wellington found the lead again in the 36th minute through Hamish Watson, who scored his second of the match. The piece of play started with Roly Bonevacia, who provided a good ball for Blake Powell, who then assisted Watson.

Leonardo almost equalised for the Jets in the 44th minute, however Phoenix goalkeeper Glen Moss did well to dive to his left to prevent the goal.

The Jets equalised again in the 52nd minute through Morten Nordstrand, who curled a powerful shot around Phoenix goalkeeper Glen Moss. The goal signalled Nordstrand’s first for the home side in his first start for his new club.

Wellington nearly found the lead in the 63rd minute, however the chance was cleared off the line by Newcastle’s Lachlan Jackson.

However, the Phoenix found themselves down to ten men in the 70th minute, after goal scorer Hamish Watson received his second yellow card for the match.

Shortly after in the 72nd minute, the Jets found the lead courtesy of Morten Nordstrand, who fired his shot past Wellington goalkeeper Glen Moss. The goal started off with Nordstrand, who played a one-two with Enver Alivodic, which set him up for the shot.

Roly Bonevacia fired a shot into Jets goalkeeper Birighitti in the 76th minute.

Mark Birighitti then produced an acrobatic save that denied a dangerous Wellington shot in the 83rd minute.

Newcastle had a dangerous double chance in the 86th minute, however a Glen Moss’ double save kept the away side in the game.

However, the Phoenix could not find an equaliser and fell just short.

The Jets are still in contention for a finals spot and face Central Coast Mariners next Sunday afternoon, while Wellington host Melbourne City next Friday evening.
