Late Kamau goal steals win for Reds

Adelaide United have continued their sparkling form by claiming a 1-0 triumph over Melbourne Victory at AAMI Park.

The game’s only goal came in the 90th minute after Scott Galloway inadvertently sent the ball into his own net as Adelaide secured their first win against the Victory in Melbourne in over five years.

Victory made one alteration to their starting eleven with the suspended Kosta Barbarouses making way for Archie Thompson who made only his second start of the season.

Tarek Elrich returned to left-back for the Reds, shifting Craig Goodwin to the wing with Bruce Kamau demoted to the bench. Stefan Mauk joined the midfield replacing the injured George Mells.

In what was anticipated to be a tightly-contested match, Adelaide keeper Eugene Galekovic was forced into a save only four minutes into the match after he tapped Leigh Broxham’s long-range effort over the crossbar.

Victory had another excellent chance in the 25th minute after a clever cross from Gui Finkler found Archie Thompson who had enough space inside the box to strike a volley on goal, but his spectacular shot sailed just over the target.

Moments later, Adelaide’s Isaias attempted a left-footed strike from outside the box, but Danny Vukovic saved the shot with ease.

Gui Finkler had the best chance of the first half in the 38th minute after his free-kick only just missed the goal as the ball collided with the woodwork.

The first-half concluded with a 0-0 scoreline as both sides failed to settle into a consistent rhythm.

Returning into the second half, Adelaide created a good opportunity in the 48th minute after Stefan Mauk combined superbly with Michael Marrone to break into the Victory goal box, but the resulting shot from Mauk drifted high over the goal.

Craig Goodwin, who was one of the Reds’ most lethal attacking threats in the game, had a great chance in the 70th minute as he darted into the box with the ball and fired a shot at goal but the effort smashed against the upright and away from goal.

As the match progressed, the game began to open up with chances coming at both ends. But it was the defenders who were stealing the show at both sides.

However, the deadlock was finally broken in the in the 90th minute by Adelaide after Bruce Kamau was left unmarked inside the box and released a strike on goal which took a heavy deflection off of Scott Galloway and ricocheted into the back of the net.

Despite Victory’s late surge, it wasn’t enough as Ben Williams signaled for full-time with Adelaide securing a valuable three points after scoring a dramatic late winner.

Melbourne Victory now look ahead to their Asian Champions League clash with Shanghai SIPG on Wednesday night, whilst keeping one eye on the ‘Big Blue’ next Saturday night. Adelaide will also be tested as they host the competition frontrunners Brisbane Roar next week.
