Mariners end year on a high note

The Central Coast Mariners have ended their poor year on a high, after they defeated the Wellington Phoenix 3-1 on New Years Eve at Central Coast Stadium.

Fabio Ferreira, Mitch Austin and Michael Neill scored for the hosts, while Blake Powell provided the sole goal for the visitors.

The Mariners made a whole lot of changes, while Jeffrey Sarpong did not make it to the starting line-up for the Phoenix.

The Mariners had the first two major chances of the game, courtesy of Michael Neill and Fabio Ferreira, however Phoenix goalkeeper Glen Moss took care of both opportunities.

Manny Muscat had the first real opportunity for the visitors, however his glancing header made it just wide.

The home team managed to find the lead in the 27th minute through a Fabio Ferreira penalty, after referee Kris Griffiths-Jones judged that Phoenix defender Manny Muscat fouled Josh Rose. Ferreira confidently blasted his penalty past goalkeeper Glen Moss.

The Mariners made it two in the 30th minute through Mitch Austin, who finished perfectly from a Roy O’Donovan piece of play and cross. Despite being in the headlines for the wrong reasons in the past week, the Mariners looked like a revitalised outfit.

Young Mariners goalkeeper Thomas Heward-Belle, who made his first professional start, produced a reflex save in the 52nd from a Kwabena Appiah deflected shot.

Templers flared in the 59th minute following an off the ball incident between Manny Muscat and Roy O’Donovan, with replays showing O’Donovan headbutted Muscat. O’Donovan received a yellow card for the incident.

Wellington came close to putting one back in the 65th minute, however a double save from youngster Heward-Belle prevented the Phoenix.

A minute later, Blake Powell managed to score for the Phoenix, who tapped it in from a well-timed cross. Powell’s goal provided a few nerves for the Mariners.

However, Michael Neill negated those nerves as he provided a clean finish in the 70th minute to beat a diving Glen Moss, which resulted from a poor free kick by the Phoenix.

Josh Bingham had another chance for the home side to score, however Glen Moss saved to his right.

The Mariners notched up their second victory of the season and travel to Geelong for their ‘home’ clash against the Melbourne Victory next Friday night at Simonds Stadium. The Phoenix now host the Brisbane Roar next Sunday afternoon.
