Round Recap – Week 3
Over 40,000 turned out for the first Sydney derby of the season this week, but despite the off-field colour and atmosphere, the best games were elsewhere in round 3.
Wellington and Brisbane played out a cracker at the Cake Tin on Saturday, with the Phoenix coming away with a 3-2 victory. On Sunday, City and Glory both got their first wins of the season, and both by 3-1 margins (over the Mariners and Reds respectively).
To begin the round, the Jets maintained their dominance over the Victory in Newcastle, winning 1-0 thanks to a second-half David Carney special.
Goal of the week
Speaking of David Carney specials, he most certainly earned our Goal of the Week plaudits in round 3. Although, a special mention must go out to Nick Fitzgerald and Michael McGlinchey, who both scored stunning goals on the weekend as well.
Moment of the week
It could’ve been the disallowed goal for Jaushua Sotirio in the derby that was the moment of the week in the A-League, but the crucial moment was the winning goal later in that game – Milos Ninkovic popping up with a fine piece of skill to send the Sydney fans into raptures at Allianz Stadium.
Player of the Season
It’s still early in the season, but there are 17 players currently on 3 votes or more in our Player of the Season count. But at the top, we’ve got two Jets, one Roar and one Phoenix player:
Friday: Newcastle Jets 1-0 Melbourne Victory
Newcastle Jets grabbed their second win of the season as they held off Melbourne Victory to win 1-0 at Hunter Stadium on Friday night.
Both sides welcomed back key defensive players for the game, with Nigel Boogaard and Leigh Broxham both returning from suspension.
Saturday: Wellington Phoenix 3-2 Brisbane Roar
Wellington Phoenix have recorded a famous 3-2 victory over Brisbane Roar on Saturday night, in a thrilling yet topsy-turvy game at Westpac Stadium.
The Roar’s early lead was cancelled out by two strikes either side of half time, before Brisbane equalised in the 60th minute. But a 76th minute winner for Wellington ensured that the Phoenix fans went home the happier of the two sets of fans.
Saturday: Sydney FC 1-0 Western Sydney Wanderers
Milos Ninkovic has scored a late goal to see Sydney FC claim bragging rights in the Sydney Derby, as the Sky Blues won 1-0 over crosstown rival Western Sydney Wanderers in front of 40,539 fans.
The win also means Sydney remain undefeated after a tough first three games, and have also only conceded one goal. Meanwhile, for Western Sydney it has been a relatively slow start, having managed just one point, and scored two goals.
Sunday: Melbourne City 3-1 Central Coast Mariners
Melbourne City snared their first win of the season through a 3-1 defeat of Central Coast Mariners at AAMI Park on Sunday.
A first half goal from Patrick Kisnorbo and two second-half goals from Bruno Fornaroli were enough to see off a spirited Central Coast side who found the net through Nick Fitzgerald.
Sunday: Perth Glory 3-1 Adelaide United
An impressive Perth Glory defeated Adelaide United 3-1 at nib Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
Perth, who had not beaten Adelaide in three years, opened the scoring late in the first half through Brazilian Sidnei Sciola after a slow start, while Guyon Fernandez and Diego Castro added to the tally.
Perth also welcomed back their captain Richard Garcia, who served his suspension in their midweek FFA Cup Semi Final victory against Melbourne City.
