Round Recap – Week 24

RoundRecap_week24A convincing 3-0 win over the Phoenix on Sunday evening catapulted the Melbourne Victory into first position on the A-League table, with a game in hand to come against Brisbane Roar in a fortnight’s time.

That advantage puts Victory squarely in the driver’s seat to claim the Premier’s Plate, but with five teams still separated by just three points, it’s still well and truly up for grabs.

Elsewhere, Brisbane Roar smashed the Mariners 6-1 on Thursday, Adelaide stole a win against Sydney on Saturday, Melbourne City and the Wanderers traded goals in a 1-1 draw on Friday, and the Glory kept pace with the Victory at the top of the table with a 2-0 win over the Jets on Monday.

Goal of the week

Steve Lustica scored his first career hat-trick this week, as part of the 6-1 demolition of the Central Coast Mariners on Thursday. His first and second strikes were sublime, making it difficult to choose which one was our favourite. In the end, given his first took a slight deflection, we went with the second of his three goals:

Moment of the week

If you were to ask the average A-League fan who they think the best goalkeeper in the league is, chances are they’ll give you a pretty definitive answer – Adelaide’s Eugene Galekovic. He’s been putting in show-stopping performances for years, but Saturday night’s effort — which featured 9 saves of the highest calibre — will go down as one of the greatest performances of Galekovic’s career.

Player of the Season

Besart Berisha picked up votes on Sunday, but apart from that, the leaderboard hasn’t changed too much in round 24. Aaron Mooy (27) and Marcelo Carrusca (26) still lead the way, with Nathan Burns and Marc Janko the next best duo on 22 votes each:
