Round Recap – Week 9

RoundRecap_Round9Round 9 was nothing if not entertaining, with the likes of Adelaide United, Melbourne Victory and Wellington Phoenix turning on the class with some comprehensive victories over the weekend.

Elsewhere, Melbourne City got past Brisbane thanks to a controversial penalty call, whilst Perth came from behind to defeat Sydney FC on Thursday night, and maintain their top spot on the A-League ladder.

Goal of the week

He may have only got a special mention last week, but this week Roy Krishna went one better, with a smashing drive past Ben Kennedy to seal the game for Wellington. It was a thumping goal, and worthy of winning our Goal of the Week.

Special mentions to Daniel Georgievski, for his top corner effort on Friday night, and Fabio Ferreira, for finishing off a wonderful team goal on Saturday against the Wanderers.

Moment of the week

Our favourite moment this week goes to Victory coach Kevin Muscat. In his post-match press conference on Friday, Muscat stated that playing the Mariners vs Victory game on Friday at a cricket ground (North Sydney Oval) has “set the sport back 20 years”. Kudos to Kevin for telling it how it is, and expressing the frustration of the vast majority of Mariners fans who think every one of their home games should be played at Gosford. You know, because Gosford is actually on the Central Coast!

Player of the Season

With another masterful performance on Saturday against the Wanderers, Marcelo Carrusca jumped into outright 1st position in our Player of the Season standings:

Two late goals from Rostyn Griffiths and Andy Keogh saw Perth Glory momentarily extend its lead at the top of the A-League table with a dramatic 2-1 win over Sydney. 11,280 fans at Allianz Stadium were left shocked at the late turnaround, after Shane Smeltz’s conversion from the spot, under questionable circumstances, gave the hosts the lead. Perth, though, fought back after being the better side for large parts of the game and ultimately took home a deserved three points.

Saturday: Adelaide United 2-0 Western Sydney Wanderers

It was a victory for the neutral tonight at Coopers Stadium as the vibrant, attacking Adelaide put on a clinic, defeating the Western Sydney Wanderers 2-0. With almost a full squad to choose from, coach Josep Gombau must have been relishing the prospect of facing the exhausted and depleted Asian champions — and they did not disappoint.

Sunday: Melbourne City 1-0 Brisbane Roar

Melbourne City have jumped back inside the top 6, following a 1-0 win over fellow-strugglers Brisbane Roar on Sunday afternoon. A 49th minute penalty converted by Aaron Mooy was the difference between the two sides in a largely dour affair in front of 7,721 fans at AAMI Park.
