Round Recap – Week 8

RoundRecap_Week8Week 8 was the ‘week of the derbies’, with Victory and the Reds facing off for a thrilling contest on Friday night at AAMI Park, before the Wanderers and Sydney FC played out a 1-1 draw in the 8th instalment of the Sydney derby. Then, on Sunday, the Jets and Mariners played out a 1-1 F3 Derby draw.

Elsewhere, ladder-leaders Perth were held to a draw by the struggling Brisbane Roar at Suncorp Stadium, whilst Nathan Burns (with the first ever hat-trick by a Wellington player) put Melbourne City to the sword, and allowed us to utilise one of the greatest headlines in history!

Goal of the week

Bernie Ibini’s effort in the Sydney derby was clearly the best we saw this week, as he weaved in and out of two defenders before unleashing a ferocious effort into the top corner past a hapless Ante Covic.

A special mention to Roy Krishna, whose third career A-League goal was one of the best we’ve seen this season — unfortunately, it came in the same week as Ibini’s stunner.

Moment of the week

Across all five A-League games, a minute’s silence before the match as well as a minute’s applause in the 63rd minute were held in honour of young cricketer Phillip Hughes, who passed away during the week. Kudos to A-League fans at all five venues for these touching gestures.

Player of the Season

With his three-goal salvo for the ‘Nix yesterday, Nathan Burns jumped up into a tie for 1st place on our Player of the Season leaderboard with Adelaide’s Marcelo Carrusca.

Melbourne Victory have continued their unbeaten start to the A-League season with a 3-2 win in a thoroughly enthralling cross-border derby against Adelaide United.

The home side would hold on despite some late pressure to go top of the table, and consign Adelaide United to their first loss of the season.

Saturday: Brisbane Roar 1-1 Perth Glory

An 86th minute goal to now-Golden Boot co-leader Henrique has salvaged a point against table-toppers Perth Glory, with Dino Djulbic’s first-half volley not enough to earn the Glory their 7th win of the season.

It had been a tumultuous week for the Queensland club, with double-winning coach Mike Mulvey sacked, with Frans Thijssen stepping in his place.

Saturday: Western Sydney Wanderers 1-1 Sydney FC

Western Sydney Wanderers were made to rue early missed chances as the points were split in a thrilling 1-1 draw at Pirtek Stadium tonight.

There were plenty of opportunities for the hosts to charge to their first win of the season after a largely dominant first half, but Sydney held firm in front of an intimidating atmosphere in Parramatta.

Sunday: Wellington Phoenix 5-1 Melbourne City

Wellington Phoenix thrashed Melbourne City 5-1 at Westpac Stadium on Sunday afternoon, courtesy of a Nathan Burns hat-trick and further goals to Roy Krishna and Roly Bonevacia.

The hosts were bolstered by the return of the Michael McGlinchey from international duty and the birth of his second child. Meanwhile, John van’t Schip made just the one change to the side that lost 2-1 at home to Sydney last week, with Jacob Melling coming in for Liam Miller.

Sunday: Newcastle Jets 1-1 Central Coast Mariners

Newcastle Jets’ winless start to the season has continued, drawing 1-1 at Hunter Stadium against Central Coast in the 34th edition of the F3 Derby.

Ecuadorian international Edson Montano gave the hosts the lead early in the second half, before his goal was cancelled out by Richard Vernes just seven minutes later.
