Round Recap – Week 11

RoundRecap_week11Perth Glory continued on their merry way in Round 11, putting the Mariners to the sword on Saturday night.

The win sees the Glory sit 6 points clear at the precipice of the A-League ladder, after Adelaide, Melbourne Victory and Sydney FC all lost over the weekend.

Elsewhere, Melbourne City pocketed a valuable 3 points on Saturday night to condemn the Victory to their first loss of the season, while Newcastle finally seem to be heading in the right direction with a 2-1 win over FFA Cup champions Adelaide United.

Goal of the week

How could this go to anyone but Daniel De Silva? The Glory whiz-kid has been in fine form of late, and is starting to show every bit of the potential that will see him move to AS Roma at the end of the season.

His goal on Saturday against the Mariners, though, was equal parts brilliant, technical, controlled and audacious. You’ve gotta love youthful exuberance, eh?

Moment of the week

On Sunday, Nathan Burns became the fastest player to 10 goals in an A-League season, as he delivered both strikes in a valuable 2-0 away victory for the ‘Nix in Sydney.

For his record feat, the potential Asian Cup squad member earns our Moment of the Week for Round 11:

Player of the Season

Burns’ performance on Sunday has edged him closer to leader Marcelo Carrusca in our Player of the Season standings, but Adelaide’s playmaker still holds a 1 vote advantage after 11 rounds this season. David Carney has also continued his fine form, earning the 3 votes on Friday against the Reds to jump up to 11 votes for the season:

Our #ALeague Player of the Season standings after week 11. Nathan Burns has closed the gap on Marcelo Carrusca.

Saturday: Melbourne City 1-0 Melbourne Victory

Erik Paartalu knows all about late, headed winners, and on Saturday night he repeated his previous Grand Final feats with a 90th minute winner as City defeated Victory 1-0 in the Christmas derby.

It was no less than City deserved, as they enjoyed the majority of chances in what was a fairly lacklustre match.
