Harold shoots down misfiring Jets

20140104-164012.jpgA youthful Perth Glory side will take much confidence back home after they won 1-0 in a smash and grab away battle against the Newcastle Jets in front of 11,966 fans at Hunter Stadium.

Both sides had something to prove in this match, with Newcastle and Perth coming off losses in 2013 and looking to start 2014 in renewed vigor.

Craig Goodwin v Matthew Davies firmed as one of the more exciting matchups on the pitch and on ten minutes the former cut inside his man and forced a save from keeper Danny Vukovic before Adam Taggart made a meal of the rebound.

Minutes later and Mark Birighitti had his own moment of calamity after pressure from Chris Harold but Steve McGarry’s tame follow up was easily dealt with by the Jets No. 1.

Quarter of an hour into the match and Taggart danced his way through the Newcastle defence and a penetrating run found Goodwin unmarked but the winger dragged his shot to the right of the oncoming Vukovic.

Both sides continued to trade barbs but in the 38th minute, Jacob Pepper gifted Chris Harold a chance and the young striker held off two defenders to place the ball past Birighitti.

Taggart was again the more involved after the restart with some great runs and a stunning shot that flashed just wide of Vukovic’s post before goalscorer Harold also had a snapshot go narrowly wide at the other end just moments later.

Nathan Burns was causing all the problems for the Glory at the defensive end, and came close to equalising after a handsome Ben Kantarovski pass but shot narrowly right.

The home side continued to pressure the glory for an equaliser and on 62 minutes Taggart turned Davies inside out but Vukovic was equally up to the task with a sliding save.

With twenty minutes to go the Newcastle Jets faithful we’re baying for blood after Vukovic cleared a ball off the line from a Kew Jaliens volley but replays conclusively showed the Glory stopper had it covered and that the ball did not cross the line.

The Jets continued their domination and with Andrew Hoole replacing center back Taylor Regan they had another attacking outlet.

And the youngster got involved right away, his pass unlocking Taggart who was brought down by Thwaite for a free kick just outside the box and Nathan Burns pulled out a top shelf save from Vukovic as he curled a shot towards the top right hand corner.

Glory fans had their hearts in their mouths as Andrew Hoole was brought down in the box and the referee erroneously first gave a corner, then corrected his decision and awarded a goal kick by pointing to the penalty spot.

Kenny Lowe was livid on the touch line as he questioned the depth of injury time being allowed, but jeers turned to cheers on the Glory bench as Matthew Gillett brought an end to Perth’s first away win of the season.
