Preview: Wellington Phoenix

A hard team to predict, a harder team to play against. Ricki Herbert has made the last three finals campaigns, and I can’t see him missing out on a fourth. The Phoenix has made the trip to Wellington one of the most daunting in the league, and has learned to grab points away from home. The Phoenix are one of those teams that just frustrate you with their uncanny knack to score at any time, no matter what the situation.

Sure, they have lost some experience in the midfield, but Herbert has covered his losses well in the off-season. This prediction could go horribly wrong, but I just can’t write off any team managed by the tactically astute Herbert.

PREDICTION: 4th. The team from across the ditch will once again frustrate teams along their travels. Wellington has become a fortress for the home team, and Phoenix should reach the playoffs on this alone.

BEST FINISH: 3rd in 2009/10.

THE SIGNING: Jeremy Brockie had a great year with Newcastle … Continue readingContinue Reading

Fantasy week 17 wrap-up

Due to the postponement of the Central Coast v Gold Coast game at Robina last weekend, week 17 only ended up featuring 5 fixtures, despite the presence of another of the regional midweek games. 14 goals over the 5 games was a reasonable return, but not nearly enough for scores in the 50′s, 60′s and 70′s to eventuate in fantasy football this week – in fact, 51 was enough to net you the top score in our Ultimate A-League fantasy league this week.

It was a pretty poor week for goalkeepers this week, given the fact there were only two clean sheets held, and those two goalkeepers really had very little to do. Those two ‘keepers, Danny Vukovic and Ben Kennedy, topped the rankings with 5 points, alongside Victory custodian Ante Covic, who managed to scrape together 5 points over his two games this week. Goalkeeper is a position I wouldn’t be trading for at the moment, … Continue readingContinue Reading

Fantasy week 10 wrap-up

Week 10 provided only 10 goals across 6 games, at an average of 1.67 goals per game, so having a glut of strikers in your fantasy team this week was probably not going to be advantageous. What is going to become a strategy for many fantasy managers over the coming weeks is sub in all their players that have a weekend and midweek game across the same round. Nothing was truer this week, when the Phoenix and Roar had their turn at the double shift, and whilst many fantasy managers would’ve loaded up on their Brisbane players, it was a case of the more Phoenix players you had this week, the better week you were going to have.

In defence, it was a trio of Phoenix players after Wellington kept back-to-back clean sheets in their two games. Manny Muscat and Andrew Durante both scored 12 points, but Ben Sigmund (also … Continue readingContinue Reading
