Jets down Mariners in F3 Derby

Central Coast Mariners were defeated by the Newcastle Jets 4-2 in Gosford on Saturday, in what was a thrilling final F3 Derby of the season.

Newcastle got the game going in the opening minute with a spectacular goal from Morten Nordstrand, who received the ball from a Ryan Kitto cross. Nordstrand headed the ball into the back of the net to give the Jets the early lead.

The following 15 minutes consisted of both teams fighting to be the next team on the scoresheet, with numerous off target shots from both teams.

But it would be Newcastle who would again work their magic to extend their lead in the 18th minute.

Again, the lead up work came from Kitto who shot the ball across field to reach Enver Alidovic who slotted the ball into the net to give Newcastle a comfortable two goal advantage.

Although Newcastle had the clear advantage in the first 30 minutes of the game, they would the first team to receive a caution, with Jason Hoffman being shown a yellow card for a dangerous tackle on the Mariners’ Nick Montgomery.

Coming into half time, it was evident that both teams were striving for more with an almost equal amount of lost opportunities from both sides.

The second half started off significantly better for the Mariners as Newcastle conceded a penalty for a hand ball from Ben Kantarovski. Fabio Ferriera closed the gap to 2-1 when he converted the spot kick.

However, it wouldn’t be long before Newcastle extended their lead once again.

Nordstrand picked up his second goal for the game, as he again worked with Kitto to establish a 3-1 advantage for the Jets.

Towards the final quarter of the game, the Mariners hit back with a shot from O’Donovan, who this time was more accurate and pocketed his 8th goal for the season.

Just a few minutes later Newcastle would add a fourth, with Mateo Poljak working with Leonardo to confirm the win with almost 10 minutes to go.
