Young guns fire Roar to victory over Reds

Brisbane Roar continued their impressive start to the 2015/16 season, after they defeated Adelaide United 3-0 on Saturday night at Suncorp Stadium.

Brandon Borrello opened the scoring in the 9th minute and sealed the game in the 92nd minute, with his fellow forward Jamie Maclaren scoring in the 78th minute.

The Roar were looking to avenge their high scoring loss in Wellington last week, while Adelaide’s chances of winning their first game of the season were boosted with the return of striker Bruce Djite from injury, who started on the bench.

Adelaide immediately created a good chance 25 seconds after kick off when Spaniard Cirio beat the offside trap and shot on target, only to be denied by Roar goalkeeper Jamie Young.

Brisbane went close shortly after in the 2nd minute, when in-form forward Jamie Maclaren headed over the bar, following a Corona free kick.

Maclaren came close again in the 8th minute, after he made a clever turn and unleashed a powerful shot, however Adelaide goalkeeper John Hall saved.

Brisbane were successful a minute later through Brandon Borrello, when a well-worked piece of Brisbane play that started through Matt McKay led to a Thomas Broich low cross, resulting in Borrello’s 3rd goal of the season.

Maclaren had another chance in the 31st minute to score, however Hall again stood up and made a crucial save.

Adelaide winger Craig Goodwin nearly equalised in the 40th minute, after his shot on target was saved by Brisbane goalkeeper Young.

United came close again just before the break through Tarek Elrich, when the Socceroo beat one defender to shoot just wide to the right.

Corona nearly scored from a corner in the 53rd minute, after his strong in-swinging cross was stopped on the line by Jamie Young.

Cirio missed a golden opportunity in the 56th minute when he beat defender Jade North and tried to chip Jamie Young, however Young stood strong.

Brisbane almost doubled their advantage in the 63rd minute, after a powerful Jamie Maclaren chance hit the upright.

Isaias almost equalised in the 65th minute from a well-worked cross, however he shot over the bar from directly in front.

Elrich found himself in a dangerous position again in the 68th minute, however Brisbane’s strong defence cleared at a crucial moment.

Brisbane had another opportunity in the 77th minute to score through Steven Lustica, only for the former Adelaide player to shoot just wide to the left.

However, they were accurate a minute later when Maclaren finally broke his run of missed chances and beat Tarek Elrich, with his finesse shot making the left hand corner.

A smart combination between Devante Clut and Steven Lustica in the 88th minute put Lustica in space, however he shot over the bar.

Brisbane sealed the win in the 92nd minute, after Brandon Borrello beat the offside trap to shoot past Hall and continued his successful season with his 2nd goal of the game.

The result lifted Brisbane into 2nd place ahead of their top of the table clash with Sydney FC next week, while Adelaide are still without a win in their 2015/16 campaign and host Melbourne City on Thursday night.
