Round Recap – Week 23


It could barely be any closer at the top of the A-League table, with five teams separated by just two points.

The reason for that was wins in round 23 to Melbourne Victory (over the Mariners), Sydney FC (over the Phoenix), Adelaide United (over the Jets), and Perth Glory (over the Wanderers.

Elsewhere, Melbourne City defeated Brisbane Roar to open up an eight point gap between the teams in the race for the last finals position.

Goal of the week

When he only has 1 career goal coming into round 23, it would’ve seemed unlikely that we’d be talking about Josh Risdon in regards to a spectacular goal this week. But here we are, and here is Risdon’s contender for Goal of the Season:

Moment of the week

It’s fair to say Melbourne Victory weren’t at their best on Friday night against the Mariners. With that in mind, though, it’s crucial for a Premiership hopeful to have the ability to win ‘ugly’. For that to happen on Friday, though, it took two moments of brilliant finishing by the indomitable Gui Finkler to ensure the Victory collected the three points.

Player of the Season

With the majority of our leaders missing games this week, there have been minimal changes at the top of the table. Rostyn Griffiths managed a solitary vote on Saturday night, but that was as good as it good for the chasing pack.

Friday: Melbourne Victory 2-1 Central Coast Mariners

Melbourne Victory made amends for their recent shady form at home with a 2-1 win over an improving Central Coast Mariners outfit at AAMI Park this evening.

A Gui Finkler masterclass was the catalyst for the performance that put his side within one point of Wellington at the top of the ladder.

Saturday: Melbourne City 1-0 Brisbane Roar

In a game with major implications for the finals series it was Melbourne City who won 1-0 over Brisbane on Saturday, in what was a massive six pointer for the last remaining finals place.

Brisbane, who have had their squad ravaged by injuries and international call-ups, lost Jerome Polenz to injury in the warm up, while City looked fresh after a week’s break and  like a team desperate to make the finals.

Saturday: Perth Glory 3-2 Western Sydney Wanderers

Perth Glory walked away with a 3-2 victory over the Western Sydney Wanderers at nib Stadium in Perth tonight, re-igniting their Premiership hopes in the process.

It was a must win game for the Glory, who haven’t won a game since January 2nd — so they needed to deliver, and they certainly did.

Sunday: Wellington Phoenix 0-3 Sydney FC

Sydney’s strong away record this season continued with a 3-0 win over league leader Wellington Phoenix on Sunday.

Jacques Faty, Shane Smeltz, and an own goal to Manny Muscat went in in the first half as the Sky Blues cruised to a comfortable win to close the gap at the top of the table, which sees the top four sides within a point of each other.

Sunday: Newcastle Jets 0-1 Adelaide United

Adelaide United have joined the logjam at the top of the A-League table, after a 1-0 win over the Newcastle Jets this afternoon at Hunter Stadium.

Marcelo Carrusca’s first half finish proved the difference in a game that, for large portions of the game, lacked fluency.
