Fantasy week 12 wrap-up

Week 12 of the 2011/12 A-League season was packed full of action, with 21 goals across the 5 fixtures at an average of over 4 goals per game. Add to that the fact that only one goalkeeper managed to keep a clean sheet, toss in a couple of red cards, and you’re left with a round where fantasy managers had plenty of possible ways to score points.

Just so you know (and knowing is half the battle), a quick note on the upcoming week 13 of the A-League; FoxSports are treating week 13 as two separate rounds of fantasy football. The first round will be the 5 games from Thursday until New Years Eve. The second round will be the 5 games back-to-back on Wednesday 4th January. Now, back to week 12…

In terms of goalkeepers, as we already mentioned there was only one who managed to keep the opposition at bay. That man was Glen Moss’s replacement Jerrad Tyson, who … Continue readingContinue Reading

Team of the week: Week 12

Well, it was quite a week in the A-League in week 12. 21 goals across the 5 games was a welcome Christmas present for the fans, with Wellington Phoenix putting 5 past Newcastle, the Heart edging the Victory in the Melbourne derby, Sydney and Adelaide sharing the points on John Kosmina’s return to the A-League, Central Coast continuing their winning ways with a 3-1 victory over Perth, and Gold Coast stretching Brisbane’s losing streak to 5 games with a 1-0 win at Skilled Park. So with all that action, and all those goals, who stood out from the pack this week, and bagged themselves a spot in the Team of the Week:

Goalkeeper – Jerrad Tyson (Gold Coast United)
Gold Coast youngster Jerrad Tyson was called in to replace the injured Glen Moss for United this week, and he gets the start this week in goals for the … Continue readingContinue Reading

Fantasy week 11 wrap-up

With no midweek games in week 11, the success of your fantasy team was going to come down completely to the strength of your squad, and not relying on players playing in two fixtures to score the majority of your points. And with only one clean sheet across the 5 games, registered by Gold Coast’s Glen Moss/Jerrad Tyson combination, it was going to come down to field players to score the bulk of your points. But with an average of 3.2 goals per game this week compared to 1.67 last week, there were substantially more points on offer this week.

As expected, it was Gold Coast’s Glen Moss who was the highest scoring goalkeeper this week with 6 points. But don’t hastily trade him into your team just yet, as an injury picked up toward the end of the game is looking like keeping him on the sideline for the best part of two months. So, instead, … Continue readingContinue Reading

Team of the week: Week 11

Up until the last game of week 11, it was looking like a weekend of 3′s. Three goals were scored in each of the first four games, and up until Alex Smith’s late goal for the Phoenix against Victory, it was looking like all games were going to register just the three. Alas, it wasn’t to be, and 16 goals were scored across the weekend at an average of 3.2 goals per game. A big step up from an average of half that in week 10, making for an exciting and enthralling round of A-League football. But, who stood out from the pack, put in a superb performance, and ensured themselves a spot in the week 11 Team of the Week:

Goalkeeper – Matt Ryan (Central Coast Mariners)
It was always going to be difficult to pick a goalkeeper this week, after only one clean sheet was recorded … Continue readingContinue Reading

Team of the week: Week 10

10 goals across 6 games didn’t exactly scream ‘excitement’, however week 10 of the A-League delivered with close games, upsets, late equalisers, and some cracking performances across the board. The Heart started off the weekend with a huge upset victory over the Roar at Suncorp, thanks to two well-worked first half goals. Wellington took two shutout wins from two games this week, with a 1-0 result over the Glory and a 2-0 result over the Roar in the midweek game. In the first rivalry game, the Mariners continued on their merry way by knocking off the Jets at Bluetongue Stadium. Following on from that, the Reds stole a late equaliser to force a draw with bitter rivals Melbourne Victory. And on Sunday, the Gold Coast halted their five game losing streak with a scoreless draw against in-form Sydney FC. But who stood out above the pack this week, and did enough to book their spot in … Continue readingContinue Reading

Fantasy week 10 wrap-up

Week 10 provided only 10 goals across 6 games, at an average of 1.67 goals per game, so having a glut of strikers in your fantasy team this week was probably not going to be advantageous. What is going to become a strategy for many fantasy managers over the coming weeks is sub in all their players that have a weekend and midweek game across the same round. Nothing was truer this week, when the Phoenix and Roar had their turn at the double shift, and whilst many fantasy managers would’ve loaded up on their Brisbane players, it was a case of the more Phoenix players you had this week, the better week you were going to have.

In defence, it was a trio of Phoenix players after Wellington kept back-to-back clean sheets in their two games. Manny Muscat and Andrew Durante both scored 12 points, but Ben Sigmund (also … Continue readingContinue Reading

Team of the week: Week 9

13 goals across 5 games headlined week 9 of the A-League. Gold Coast slipped further away from the leading pack after a 2-0 away loss at Perth, while the Victory’s resurgence was halted by a well-supported Jets side. Adelaide were embarrassed on their home turf by the Mariners, and the Heart hosted and won the first Community game for the season over the travelling Wellington Phoenix. But all eyes were on Jubilee Oval in Sydney, as the Roar’s 36 game unbeaten streak came to a lacklustre end as they were outplayed in all areas by a confident and hard working Sydney FC. But, who were the standouts this week? Who did enough for their team to be considered for selection in the week 9 Team of the Week:

Goalkeeper – Liam Reddy (Sydney FC)
A point blank save off Besart Berisha in the first half headlined Reddy’s performance, and he managed to … Continue readingContinue Reading
